Of Wood And Man

Of Wood And Man is not only a sobering video poem about the impact man is having on the environment, but also explores the fact that mans’ exploitation of the natural world via his superior intelligence will only lead him more swiftly to a common grave with nature itself.

Of Wood And Man

In this place
where plains enfold a restless sky
where eagles sweep
whilst creatures pacify their young
you stand
grim-faced
indifferent to the passing day

you are the man
the man is you
inseparable
he seeks the skeletons
that lie beneath your hallowed heath
to rape
to yield;
condemn your knotted dreams

you shield your weeping wood
misunderstood
diminished
in a desperate truth
that turns to dust
with every barren vow
and trampled trust
bough’d down
conceding victory to greed
your seedling souls unsown

In this place
no longer graced by eagles’ sweep
where earth was never yours to keep
you fill the grave of wood and man
who took
but never gave

The ending lines are powerful and brings home the message of our role in the destruction of nature ~ I feel sad that the place is no longer graced by eagles and all the trees are dust ~

Love love LOVE those “knotted dreams.” I am such a lover of trees, and this is just beautiful.

  3. I simply love the video .. so much truth in what we do to nature… so sad that man absorbs himself in greed, to take and never give… I think it’s about owning something that you cannot owe.

What a beautiful presentation, Shirley, I’m so impressed. Your words carried even more of an impact through the video. No, we humans have never owned the land or anything else of nature but we act as if we do with carelessness and greed. Your ending verse was sobering. Welcome to dVerse, so very glad that you joined us.
